Modern Literary Period
Modern period people focused on celebrating the self and success of individual .While individualism was not as popular as in the Romantic era, it was common, and literature often focused on the self and optimism. During the modern period, people began to break free of certain religious, political and social views, and began thinking independently.Many authors mistrusted institutions of power such as government and religion, and rejected the notion of absolute truths.
Characteristics of Modern literature: Authors often used satire, irony, comparisons, and juxtaposition Irony and satire helped the author criticize, or make fun of what they are writing about, such as society. They often wrote in first person. As opposed to the beginning, middle, end structure, modern literature is more like a rant.
E.M Forster, while following some of the periods forms and techniques, broke away from the pack. In A Room with a View, Forster did use irony and satire, and did criticize society, however, he did not speak in first person, and the novel had a clear beginning middle and end.
